CMV DRIVER SAFETY TRAINING - DRY VAN CARGO SECUREMENT

SHIFTING OF LOAD

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT

“If there are sections of empty space in the trailer after loading the cargo, you will need to prevent the cargo from moving, by using blocking and bracing, dunnage, airbags, friction mats, load straps, load bars or any other means to prevent the load from moving en route. Why? Failure to prevent shifting of the load can negatively impact the stability and maneuverability of your unit, and if it builds enough momentum, it could result in loss of control or even a rollover. This is not only dangerous to you, but also to other motorists. Shifting cargo also has potential to lean or roll against the trailer doors, becoming a danger for the next person to open the trailer. Not to mention, if the cargo is moving around, it will most likely get damaged in transit, which, in turn, will most likely be refused by the customer. It is therefore crucial to always ensure your load is immobilized or contained as effectively as possible to prevent shifting. This not only helps to prevent damage to the cargo, but also helps minimize the chance of damage to both you, and your equipment.”
