CMV DRIVER SAFETY TRAINING - DRY VAN CARGO SECUREMENT
LAW OF FORCES
VIDEO TRANSCRIPT
“All cargo must be secured within your vehicle by structures of adequate strength, dunnage or airbags to fill the space between the cargo and the wall of the vehicle. The FMCSA specifies that any securement measure used must withstand the forces of 0.8g in the forward direction and 0.5g in the left, right and rearward directions. The first number – 0.8g is the average force that a vehicle with ABS braking can apply when coming to an emergency stop in ideal road conditions. The second number 0.5g applies to the sideways force generated while driving on the freeway on/off ramp, the speed generated in reverse and coming to an emergency stop. This means that the securement must be able to withstand 80 percent of the cargo’s weight for 0.8g in the forward direction and 50 percent of the cargo’s weight in the other directions.”
